Wombats

4 reasons we get calls on wombats:

  • Hit by a car
  • Attacked by a dog
  • Mange
  • Wombat wandering around during the day

If you find a wombat that has been killed by a car, if safe, remove from the road and check for a joey in the pouch. Remember wombats have backward facing pouches. If you do find a joey, do not pull the joey off the teat, it can damage their mouth. Keep the joey warm and in a dark, quiet space away from children and domestic animals. Do not try and feed the joey and contact us so we can get the joey to an experienced carer as soon as possible.

Wombats attacked by dog's will more than likely need to receive medical treatment for any obvious external injuries and checked for any internal injuries.
Mange is a tiny mite that effects a number of animals – wombats, dogs & foxes. The skin becomes irritated, crusty and lesions will occur. Wombats with mange need to receive immediate medical attention. Untreated mange is a slow and painful death.

Seen a wombat wandering around during the day? Please contact us immediately. A wombat out during the day is usually in trouble. They are nocturnal animals and active most at night. However you may see them at dusk and dawn. If you are unsure, there is no harm in calling us for some advice.
