Possums
There are two types of possums we come across in Melbourne
- Brushtails - about the size of a cat, pointed ears, fluffy tail, last three quarters of tail black in colour.
- Ringtails - half the size of a cat, round ears, they curl their tail, tail has a white tip and fine fur.
Reasons why we receive calls about possums:
- Hit by car
- Attacked by cat or dog
- Possums in the roof
- Victims of fire and heat stress
- Loss of habitat
- Cruelty
A possum on the ground during the day needs help. If safe, please place a box or washing basket over the possum to protect it from predators and call us. Remember that if you have seen a possum that has been hit by a car, if safe, please remove it from the road and check for a joey in the pouch. Possum trapping should be used as an absolute last resort. It is an extremely stressful experience to the possum. It is also an offence to relocate a possum more than 50 metres from where it was caught.
Possum in your roof 
An easy and cost effective solution is to provide the possum with an alternative home – buy a possum box. Once the possum is out of the roof, it is your responsibility to make sure any holes or entry points are fixed.
