Koalas

The main reasons koalas come into care:

  • Hit by car
  • Dog attack
  • Bushfires
  • Heat stress
  • Loss of natural habitat
  • Chlamydia – bacterium that causes eye, urinary and reproductive tract diseases & pneumonia.

If you see a koala on the ground, this usually means something is wrong, so please call us. It is best to leave the catching and handling of koalas to an experienced rescuer. If you do have to handle a koala, please remember they have sharp claws and can also bite. If you see a koala attacked by a dog please try and write down the following details about the dog: breed, size, was the dog shaking its head when attacking the koala. These are important details and are helpful when assessing injuries.
