Echidnas

Echidna in your backyard? Keep domestic pets and children away from the animal.

Clear bubbles from an echidna’s snout indicates a healthy echidna.

NEVER DO THE FOLLOWING

  • Never use a shovel to dig an echidna out of the ground – you can inflict horrific injuries to their snouts and feets and means the animal needs to be euthanized.
  • Do not put an echidna in a wire cage – they can break their snouts off. A well-ventilated plastic rubbish bin is more suitable.
  • Do not lift echidnas up by their back feet
  • You do not need to provide warmth
  • Do not attempt to feed or provide water
  • Do not relocate echidnas
